Jan 17 2024, 13:32
On January 16th, the portal of the Municipality of Venice dedicated to the payment of the city access fee will open. The 29 days of the year when payment will be required to land in the lagoon have been revealed.

Calls for interventions to mitigate the problems arising from mass tourism have been ongoing for months in Venice and other art cities: January 16th will be remembered as a turning point for Venice. The Access Contribution to Venice portal has officially been activated, establishing a fee for entry into the city on specific days of the year, starting today, to limit the influx of short-term tourism.

How it works and where to buy the ticket for Venice

The access contribution is a fee of 5 euros introduced by the Municipality of Venice, to be paid by occasional visitors on certain specific days in 2024 to access the ancient city of Venice. There are 29 days considered critical due to the huge tourist flow. Starting from the Festa della Liberazione (Liberation Festival), the calendar set by the administration is as follows: April 25-30, May 1-5, May 11-12, May 18-19, May 25-26, June 8-9, June 15-16, June 22-23, June 29-30, July 6-7, July 13-14.

Tourists visiting the city of Venice on these days, from 8:30 am to 4 pm, but not staying in the city, must pay the 5 euros for the indicated day.

The contribution does not apply to minors under 14 who can enter for free with the presentation of an ID. Also exempt is the visitor who arrives after 4 pm, perhaps to spend the evening in the city. To pay, simply go to the portal, select the chosen date, and enter your contact details (email or phone) to receive the ticket and pay with a credit card or Paypal. The reservation can be canceled until the day before the chosen date.

Who is exempt from the contribution

Residents in the metropolitan city of Venice and, generally, in Veneto. Those who work or study in Venice, those staying in accommodation in the municipality, those arriving for a sports event or a school trip, those visiting relatives or acquaintances, and those belonging to law enforcement. All these categories can fill out a form to obtain an exemption.
